Matte Finish-Why It Matters On Stage and In Video

film cameraOne of the many prized characteristics about gaffers tape is its matte (non-shiny) finish.

Because it is a woven cloth tape, made from cotton thread, it is not shiny like duct tape (reinforced vinyl), and thus does not reflect light.

Stagehands and set designers love this mattte finishe, because it means that they can make repairs, secure cables, and hide things the audience shouldn’t see, simply by applying a strip of tape.

On a film or video set, a non-shiny surface doesn’t reflect light, meaning that the tape (and what it covers) will not be easily seen by the camera.
